CHANDIGARH: Even as the Haryana government is yet to act against the officials of urban local bodies (ULB) department, town and country planning department and revenue department, the owners of the properties in the municipal limits said the corrupt officials are giving them a tough time.

Even for a single alteration or correction, the applicants are totally at the mercy of the civic body officials.

Earlier this month, fed up with the alleged corruption in the municipal corporation office of Fatehabad, even local MLAs and MP Sunita Duggal had opened a front against it. The property dealers from the area as well had gone on strike over this.

Notably, after detecting a registry scam resulting in the registration of 30,000-odd properties in violation of sections 7 and 7A of the HDR Act, the government had decided to chargesheet around 170 officials of three departments for their alleged involvement in the scam. But these remain only ‘in paper’ measures so far.

“We own the property. Corporation has laid sewage, water and roads here. We are paying property tax for the last 10 years. But still we are not able to correct entries or get the property transferred, unless we bribe officials,” said Satyavir Singh, a resident of Parha Mohala Rohtak.

The condition is similar in Kalka municipal council where residents are made to run around to get their NOCs or transfer of properties. “If you call it a violation or unapproved colony, why take property taxes from us? What we know is that this has become another source of corruption,” said Harman Soni, a local from Kalka.

Efforts made to reach ACS ULB S N Roy and urban local bodies minister Anil Vij failed. While officials in the office of director general ULB said, “We cannot bend the rules for any one. Their problems could be genuine but we are helpless.’’
