They even threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike against the UMC from September 22, if their demand is not met.
District president of Ulhasnagar Congress, Rohit Salve, has given a 10-day ultimatum to UMC commissioner Dr Raja Dayanidhi demanding the cancellation of this tax. He has written a letter about the same to the commissioner.
Salve said, “The UMC is charging 73.5 per cent tax on property given on rent by property holders, which is the highest in state and is unfair.” He added that due to the high tax, several corporate companies, big outlets, banks and ATMs were planning to move out of the city.
Salve said that the civic body should also transfer the tax department staff members who have been working on the same post for a long period.
Earlier, corporators from all parties had demanded to abolish this tax and a resolution was also passed for the same in the UMC’s general body meeting. However, the administration has not taken any decision on the same yet.
