The town planning section is responsible for approving building plans, regularising them and clearing encroachments. The section is short staffed to meet the workload prevailing in the city, sources said.
Corporation commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara has issued an order. It has been circulated with the town planning officials and engineering officials.
“In addition to the current work nature, engineering officials working in zonal and ward levels will additionally work with town planning officials,” a statement from the corporation said.
Corporation officials said that the engineers would act against buildings without permission and buildings constructed in violation of the permission issued by the local body based on the orders issued by the civic body from time to time.
They will help safeguard the properties belonging to the civic body including the roads, public places, open space reserve in the approved layouts and remove encroachments, if any.
They will also help to identify buildings which have lost stability and bring them down to ensure the safety of the lives and other properties.
An official from the corporation said these engineers would visit the buildings even during the foundation stage to check whether it is being constructed adhering to the design approved by the corporation. Regularizing buildings once they are constructed in violation of the building rules is a difficult task for the civic body, which also involves litigations. Moreover, the proprietor of the property might also find themselves in trouble later, he said.
